A safe shower, a new beginning: The Bennetts' story

For Barbara and William Bennett, something as simple as taking a bath had become a daily worry. Getting in and out of the tub was hard. The risk of slipping or falling made a basic routine feel unsafe. They knew something needed to change, but like a lot of homeowners, they were not sure where to start or what kind of help was actually out there.

When Bill and Barbara Bennett needed to choose between new windows and a safe bathroom, they thought they had to sacrifice their safety for comfort. Thanks to the partnership between Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada (RTNNV) and the Nevada Housing Division (NHD), they didn't have to choose.

That is a tough place to be. You know your home is not working for you anymore, but you do not know who to call or how to pay for the work.

The Bennetts first replaced their windows, which was an important step. But they still needed a safer, more accessible shower. That is when their local community resource center pointed them in the right direction.

Finding the right help

The Bennetts connected with Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada. But here is the thing: we could not have done this work alone. Our partnership with the Nevada Housing Division made all the difference.

The Nevada Housing Division (NHD) helped fund the Bennetts’ bathroom modifications, and RTNNV carried out the work on the ground. NHD's support didn’t stop at providing resources. They also joined us to document this transformation and are helping us amplify the message that safe housing is possible for everyone.

Now, the Bennetts' home is safer and works better for their daily lives. They do not have to worry about climbing into a slippery tub anymore. They can focus on enjoying their home instead of managing its risks.

How the work actually gets done

What goes into a project like this? It starts with a conversation.

Gregg Hamilton is our Operations Manager. He works directly with homeowners to assess their needs, figure out which repairs matter most, and guide the whole process from start to finish. Every home is different, and every homeowner gets a plan that fits their real life.
